Hi Monty,
I ride with Jeff Brenneman and the Orange County, chapter of Bikers for Christ and I work at Duke Hospital in Durham. I’m part of our down biker ministry team and Jeff asked me to update you on the condition of a young man severely injured in a bike crash Sunday night.
His name is Matthew Thornburg, 23 yo, saved (praise the Lord) from a strong Christian family. As I understand it he was trying to adjust his headlight while driving home Sunday evening (Mar 21st), either ran off the road or clipped a mailbox which then threw him into a light pole. At this time he has been diagnosed with a severed spinal cord and is paralyzed from the chest down. He has use of his arms and has no head injuries. I’ve not met him personally yet as he’s in ICU, but his mom said he’s awake and aware of what’s happening. He’s scheduled for surgery this afternoon to fuse his back. We are praying for a miracle that this young man may be able to walk again if it be God’s will. I will provide an update when I find out how the surgery went.

Bikers For Christ have a great ministry with downed bikers and I have invited them to post their concerns for prayer here on this website. We began with the idea we would cover WNC, but God’s plans are always bigger than ours. If we can pray for them and they can pray for us, then what’s the loss? – only gain for God and His glory. That’s where it belongs. And, if we have a group from California, Florida, or Maine that wants prayer for a downed biker, then we will do what God has called us to do. Can I get an Amen? SFFS Monty.
AMEN!
Hi All,
I want to update you on Matthew’s situation. There’s been so much going on I can’t remember what’s been sent out and what’s not but here’s the latest as of Tuesday morning March 30th.
Matthew underwent surgery last Friday and had metal rods placed in his back to give spine support where it was broken in the accident. Unfortunately, when they got in there the doctors discovered there was nothing could be done surgically to restore the use of his legs. He had a couple of down days as he came to grips with his situation but I was able to meet with him and pray yesterday and he’s ready to move onto the next phase of his new life. He is being air flighted to the Shepard Spine and Brain center in Atlanta this morning and should be settled in there by this afternoon. According to his parents they expect him to be there 4-6 weeks doing an intense rehab regimen of 8 hours per day / 5 days per week. On the weekends he will be doing recreational type activities. Visitation hours will be 5-9 PM M-F and 9 AM-9 PM on the weekends.
We are continuing to pray for a miracle that God will work and restore full use of his legs if that be His will. God is working in Matthew’s life and in the lives of those he and his family have come in contact with over the last week. We’ve had several awesome pray circles in the hospital waiting room and God is working fully.
Continue to lift up Matthew and his family as he goes through his rehab. Bikers for Christ North Georgia chapter will be ministering to Matthew while he’s in Atlanta and we praise God for their participation in the Down Biker Ministry there.
In Christ,
Rhett

Hello Rett……I wanted to let you know that a few of us went over tonight and met with Matthew (Bird) and his family. He seems to be doing as well as can be expected. He had a very tiring day so we didn’t hang around long. We did have prayer with him and his family before we left. We will be going back and checking in on Bird and his family and we will keep you all advised on his status. Take care and God Bless.

Hello, This is Janet, Matthew’s mom. Wanted to update all of you. First, let me thank you for your prayer support. What an awesome gift you can give someone by praying for them. Matthew and I returned home on May 27th. We just got him settled in the new addition to our home. We have an awesome community and church family who have helped us in so many ways. Matthew is managing a driving range in our community called “TEE-BIRDS” driving range. We would love for you to stop by and chat with us sometimes. God has brought us through so much. We are still praying for the miracle that Matthew will be able to walk again one day. Your continued prayer support is appreciated.
